Things you did not know about BLAUWGEEL #4

All songs on BLAUWGEEL are now about 5 to 7 years old, since it took us about two years to write the album. One song on the record, however, is considerably older: “I’m a Hunter, Not a Thief”.

We started working on it even before recording ROODBLAUW in 2010, so about ten years ago. It took us a hell of long time to make it work. Bas wrote the original chord progession (the part from 1:40 to 2:40) on an acoustic guitar but felt it was more a singer-songwriter hook than something we could use as a band. When we were writing BLAUWGEEL we revisited the piece, Joene figured out some other chords to play on top of it, and voila: it suddenly had an All Shall Be Well vibe.

Things we love about BLAUWGEEL #4

Back in the BLAUWGEEL days, before Niels joined the band, we ‘only’ had two guitarists (Bas en Joene). But many times we felt we needed just a bit more guitar, and on those moments Wouter would leave his bass and grab a six-string (the first half of “Hunter”, for example).

But we still had an appetite for more guitars, and luckily for us, not long after releasing BLAUWGEEL, we had an opportunity to indulge. Luc de la Selle contacted us to see if we were interested in participating in his Euro-PA project, where he travels around the continent to film musicians in intimate settings.

It gave us the chance to go full on guitar. We ended up recording “Everything Can Be Anything Else” with not two, not three, but four guitars (and one kick drum). Vincent was happy to get away from his drum kit for once and to pick up a Les Paul. We’re still happy with the result.

And now for the best part:
