ALL SHALL BE WELL (and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well)

Things you did not know + things we love about BLAUWGEEL (1/5)

November 4, 2019

Today marks the fifth birthday of BLAUWGEEL, our second record. To celebrate, this week we are sharing a bunch of memories of making the record. And of course, since it is a celebration, we’re treating you to a huge discount on our entire catalogue.

Things you did not know about BLAUWGEEL #1

What you might know: we recorded the whole album by ourselves. What you don’t know: we regularly had to stop our recording sessions, because of… seagulls.

Recording everything ourselves meant we didn’t have access to a proper studio. Our rehearsal space is located on the top floor of a steel company. It’s not an ideal space for good recordings. So we opted for using the main construction hall, to see if we could utilise its natural reverb. But… The roof of the building is a popular resting spot for seagulls, and whenever one landed there, our microphone levels would hit red peaks, which in turn would thrust us in a fit of anger and despair. On the upside, in the end we learned how to find our inner core of zen.

The bane of our existence in 2013/2014

Funny thing though: when in 2015, French dj Allumes Feux made a remix of “I’m a Hunter, Not a Thief”, he added bird sounds. Full circle!

Things we love about BLAUWGEEL #1

When we’re writing songs, one thing we always pay extra attention to are transitions from one part to another. We take great pleasure from coming up with transitions that, on paper, seem illogical and complex, but sound completely organic.

There are two moments specifically on BLAUWGEEL that fit that mould. In “For the Ones to Whom Neither the Past Nor the Future Belong”, at around the 6:25 mark, we switch from a 4/4 time signature to 3/4. Did you ever notice that?

Then, in “I’m a Hunter, Not a Thief” from the 2 minute mark onward, we sometimes switch between 4/4 and 4/4 + 3/4 (or 7/4 if you will). Basically just stripping the cadence of one count. It gives the song an extra punch and adds energy.

And now, to really get this party started:
